Hello Alex! How are things going bro? You're one of the few people I know who's been into the Philippine underground Death/Grind for a long time. Tell us about the first demos you got and the first zines you read, and when you actually started doing tape trading and all that stuff.
Hell-o Jamie! I'm off work today and I'm listening to Immolation's "Providence" EP right now and it slays! It massacres the post "Unholy Cult" releases. I will not have peace of mind until I get my hands on a physical copy of this EP! Over twenty years of burning chaos. Respect. Nothing can fuck with "Here In After" though. I got obsessed with death metal when I was in fifth to sixth grade and I still have the same passion up to this day. There are too many to mention, but the demos of Death and The Grimoire Of Exalted Deeds 'zine changed my life. I would not be what I am right now if it weren't for Chuck Schuldiner and Bill Zebub.

Could you tell us a little about your zine "In Dark Purity"? How did you start it and how are things going with it today?
In Dark Purity is the embodiment of my passion for underground metal. The 'zine supports bands that knows what they are about and what they stand for. I was not content with just being a fan. Buying records and merchandise was not enough. I wanted to do more to support the music I love. I'm working on my sixth issue and I hope to finish it before the end of the world which is predicted to be next year. Ha!

How do you choose a band you'll work with? Is IDP open for genres like Powerviolence, Crust & Black Metal? Do you care only about the musical aspect?
Regardless of genre, if a band manages to crush my skull, I will feature them in my 'zine. Death metal is my passion though. It sounds gay, but metal is not only music, it's a way of life. Anyone can be a musician, but not everyone can be a metalhead. If you know what I mean.

How many copies of each issue do you release? How does the distribution occur?
I released 400 copies of each issue. I can't tell if I will be able to release more or less for the sixth issue. I'm presently living in Singapore, and as you know, everything is expensive down here. The copies will depend on how much money I will have at the time of releasing it. I wanted Kris Aquino and Baby James to endorse the 'zine, but I can't afford their talent fee even though they are talentless cunts.

I enjoy doing the interviews the most. It makes me see through the eyes of the band. In my opinion, a good 'zine must have an editor that knows what he or she is talking about, it must be pure with its intention, it should be in your face honest, and it must have a sick sense of humor.

Did you see or felt something exceptional during the 90’s death metal scene in the Philippines ? What were you into at this time? Do you prefer the early 90's stuff over anything out today? I heard somewhere that you play in a band before. Tell us something about it. Any plans of playing in a band again?
I used to play guitar in a death metal band called Carrion. We played gigs here and there and we have a two song rehearsal demo that features the songs "Deliverance" and "Dwellers Within." I was planning to look for the tape last time I was home, but I didn't have the time to dig through my shit. I want to play in a band again, but I don't have the time.

What does Death metal means for you?
Death metal is an art form of the dark side of humanity. It is the sickest form of metal for me. I've been into it more than half of my life and longer than I have known my wife. Ha!
You are a big Malignancy fan! What does this band means to you?
Hell yes! Malignancy is the alpha and omega of technical death grind! Well, for me at least. They are the sickest band I have unearthed from the underground.

I discovered Malignancy through the "Ignorance Is Bliss" demo. I got a dubbed copy (Not a copy made by the band) from a trader from the US. I received the package while I was about to go to school. I think I was in second or third year college at that time. I remember opening the package during class and I couldn't wait to go home to listen to it. Ha! As soon as I got home I headed straight to my room and listened to the demo in full volume with total disregard for my neighbors and my skull was totally crushed by their sickness and brutality! I am severely obsessed with Malignancy because they play the music that I want to listen to. Malignancy is sick, brutal, technical, and extreme. I love the style and the concept. All the qualities I look for in a band is in Malignancy. They are perfect to me. I have been following their releases and they have never disappointed me because they get malignant with every release. I have had the honor and pleasure of meeting Danny Nelson in person when I wasin the US in 2006 and one of my things to do in life is to thrash in a Malignancy pit someday. Horns up to Malignancy for staying malignant after all these years!

Tell something about your "Malignant Obsession". Do you own collector items or very particular Malignancy materials you’re proud of? Have you got the original releases of their first demos?
I try to get my hands on all things Malignancy. I'm proud with each and every piece of Malignancy swag I have because it represents the band at a certain period of time. What I don't have are original copies of the "Eaten Out From Within" demo, "Rotten Seed" demo and the "Promo CD 1998."

Could you tell us a little about your label/distro "Berdugo Records"? How did you start it and how are things going with it today?
Since I have been buying, selling, and trading records, 'zines, and merchandise for years, I simply named what I do. Berdugo Records releases are purely local. The label/distro is doing fine, but I only get to devote time for it when I'm off work these days though.
What was the first band you released? Did you choose them or was it the contrary? Was it hard to convince them to work with you, as you were a very new label with no release?
Chamber 69's "Labanan Ng Malilibog" is the first release of Berdugo Records. Mel and I have been in contact for a long time so when I asked him if he was interested to work with me and he simply said yes.

It's a known fact that running a label cost a lot. What motivates you in maintaining your label? So far what are the reactions like that you're getting from the scene?
I try not to think of the costs involved in running a label. Spreading the sickness is more important to me. I don't give a fuck about what others think. I just do what I do.
Berdugo Records deals mainly with Death Metal bands, what is it about that got you so interested with this kind of filth? And tell us about your current releases. Among all of your releases, which one's your favorite? Why?
Death metal is the cure for my sickness. Ha! I love everything about it. The music, lyrics, artwork, etc... I don't have a favorite release because they are all important to me. Pus Vomit is recording an EP called "Stoned To Death." I was at their first recording session at Demiurge Digital and the new songs slay! I can't wait to listen to the final output. It will be released in the first quarter of 2012.

Perfect band to release? I don't have an answer for that. Ha!

What exactly is your favorite genre and why? Do you listen to non-metal stuff as well?
Death metal flows in my veins. Once in a while I listen to acid jazz and Bjork, but most of the time, I listen to death metal.

I love and respect Monstrosity! I'm still in contact with them up to this day. All their releases slay! "Imperial Doom" is cult, but "Millennium" is where it's at. The riffs in that record are total bone crushers! I actually just got my "Millennium" 12" vinyl LP signed by Lee Harrison. I didn't rip off my 'zines name from their record. Ha! It's how I describe my passion for underground metal, in dark purity!
