Interview: The Kill

Hello Jay! How are things going at the moment?  The Kill has been around for over a decade and still grinding; what keeps the band going?
Things are going well at the moment. The reason we keep grinding is we keep writing new songs and they are to us always improving. It's our love of grind and blasting that keeps us going and of course playing live, our shows seem to always be a bit crazy!

Give us a little background on the band members and how you guys are formed.
The band formed in back in the year 2000 when a band that myself and Roby were doing called Open Wound disbanded. We asked our original vocalist Neil from Undinism to come down and have a scream and he was in the band for a couple of years. We then got Tonebone from Bloodduster on vocals and he recorded on our first album The Soundtrack to your Violence. Then we got Nik in from Superfun Happy Slide and til this day he is still screaming abuse for The Kill. Nik also does various noise projects too. As I said myself and Roby had a band called Open Wound which I did vocals for and Roby also had a death grind band called Misinabit. I have also been in various punk bands and had a crust hardcore band called Heads Kicked Off and up until recently was also screaming for Fuck I'm Dead.

Can you tell us why you have chosen The Kill as the band’s name? Do you think it fits well to your music style? How would you like to describe The Kill's music?
The Kill is a Napalm Death song so I think that's how we got the name originally but it does suit our musick style. I would describe our musick as angry grindcore thrash!

I know your musical influences are very diverse - even so, care to name a few of the bands strongest musical and non-musical influences?  Would it be entirely wrong if I said that you seem influenced by Hemdale, Regurgitate and Entrails Massacre?
No you would not be entirely wrong with those influences. Here's some other bands I reckon would be influential to us, Early Squash Bowels, Discordance Axis, Slayer and other old thrash bands, Napalm Death etc, etc..

How would you compare your newest material to previous releases? What Kill's release/s do you consider as your personal favorite? And what can you say about the bands that you've shared releases with?
I reckon our newest releases probably have more of a thrash element to it. My favourite would have to be Make 'Em Suffer, I happy with all the songs on that release. We have been very lucky to do splits with some fucking excellent bands. All the bands we have done splits with are all awesome bands and bands we all really get into to.

How much time do you spend to write a song? From a lyrical standpoint, The Kill covered a lot of social/political issues, who writes the lyrics and what's the inspiration?
Nik writes all the lyrics, some political but mostly they are a bit comical. I think his inspirations are just shit that happens in daily life.

Your music is quite varied; it's not just a one minute ear-battering blast beat. What do you think make a good grind core song? Is it the speed, the catchiness or something entirely different?
I think a good grindcore song is how good the song is written and put together. I don't think it matters how fast a song is or how long it goes for as long as it sounds good. At the end of the day it also comes down to someone’s tastes too, I might dig a song but you may not?

Australia has so many of the greatest grind bands in the world right now, what kind of response do you guys get in your homeland? What can you say about Super Fun Happy Slide (Nik’s), Captain Cleanoff, The Day Everything Become Nothing, Ebolie, Blood Duster, Kill a Celebrity, Warsore and Fuck Im Dead (YES!) ? Any new bands would you like to recommend?
Our shows at home are always good, we get a good response when we play and we are lucky to live in a city with such good bands and plenty of venues that will let grindcore bands play. Good new Aussie bands would be Doubled Over, Headless Death, Ether Rag.

What's the most perverse/disgusting act you ever commited?
I was once very drunk and had to take a shit in the street, I can't remember it very well as I had drunk my own body weight in beer and I weigh quite a bit!

Do you have a great admiration to serial killers?
I don't admire them but I find it interesting why they do such acts. How there mind can be so fucked up and won't to kill people but I don't think it is good in any way.

Have you ever contemplated about how such serial killers feel about lyricist and gore enthusiast such as yourselves, using their twisted state of mind for lyrics and themes? Elaborate.
No not really, I don't even think any serial killers would even know any of the bands. We don't really have twisted minds but I personally just think these sort of lyrics just suit the musick.

If you are to be a serial killer, who would you be and what sorts your will your victims be?
 I'm not a serial killer.

And how would you like to die??
I reckon it would be cool to get bitten by a zombie and then be the undead and roam around making more zombies if this was real ha ha

What are some newer bands that you've heard recently that you recommend? Any new albums you've picked up that you've liked, or do you mostly just listen to a lot of the older stuff?
I haven't heard much new shit lately but good albums from 2013 would be Agents of Abhorrence Relief, great local Australian band. The Decapitated Midgits, The Communion the kill just did a 7" split with. I listen to old new whatever as long as it's good I  don't care when it was released.

Somebody should make an Australian goregrind / grindcore CD compilation.
That would be awesome, maybe we should hassle Blastasfuck grindcore to put it out?

Are there any gigs coming up for you guys? I read somewhere that you’ll be playing in OEF Australia?
Yep we are playing OEF Australia and we are also going over to Europe this year to do a tour and play OEF Czech, we cannot wait it's going to be such a good time and watch out Europe!

Do the other members have any other projects beside The Kill? What are you guys doing besides playing in the band?
Nik has various other things happening, the mighty Superfun Happy Slide and a noise bands, Holy Boner, Umbilacle Tentacle and more. I was until recently doing Fuck I'm Dead but we have now finished. I also have a punk rock band with Rohan from Captain Cleanoff and we are also going to do a Terrorizer cover band. Roby only does The Kill.

When we talk about Philippines, do you know some of our bands? Who are among your current contacts in the Philippines? Any chance you could cum over to the Philippines?
I personally don't know of any bands from the Philippines and don't have any contacts there, I'm sure Roby nows people there and some of the bands. I wouldn't be against coming over for a tour, it would be cool to do an south east asia tour, it's not that far from Australia.

How would you describe The Kill on stage? And how do people normally react to your music?
On stage we have energy but we don't really move around much but it is energetic. Our crowds are normally pretty angry and we do get good mosh pits when playing. We normally play for about half and hour of violence.

What kind of shit has been spinning on your players lately? And please talk about your favorite Horror/Gore/Splatter flicks... Any movies you’d like to recommend?
Satyricon, Satyricon. Looking for an Answer, various albums, Machetazo Ruin, Rompreprop. I was actually in a horror movie made locally called Demons Among Us, I was a demon. Pretty cool and fun to be a part of.

What can we expect from The Kill in future?
We are currently working on a new album that should be out in the coming months so look out for it

If there's a movie or book about THE KILL, who would be in it and what would it be about?
I don't know but it would be cool to be to play Mick from Wolf Creek John Jarret was bloody awesome as that character. Harsh movie.

Thank you for answering all these shit. Best of luck with the band... Anything you'd like to add? Cheers!

No problem at all mate and thanks. Nothing more to add so take it easy or do it well Cheers!
