Interview: Sarcosis

Answered by: Steve

1. Hello Steve! How are things going bro?
Quite good man. The band is in a good place right now with a new dedicated line up, Im happy with how were progressing.

2. Give us a little background on the band members and how you guys are formed.
Sarcosis started with me and Kenny, we both live in a small area where nobody else listens to brutal music, we both jammed on guitar together for quite a while, we spent ages looking for a drummer with similar influences but to no avail. Then I took up drums myself to try get the ball rolling and without wasting much time we started Sarcosis.

3. Can you tell us why you have chosen SARCOSIS as bands name? Do you think it fits well to your musick style?
I like to think it suits us quite well as we base our track titles on medical terms, so Sarcosis meaning "an abnormal formation of flesh" seems to work.

4. How was the response been to your demo "Sepsis Sacral Carna"?
Good in a sense, as in we've had no negative interviews or comments which is great for me as its our first demo, Ireland is such a small scene for goregrind there's no huge interest in it but overseas brutal heads seem to enjoy it and thats what I was aiming for all along.

5. Are you satisfied with the results? And did everything go as you planned? if not, what would you liked to have done differently?
Yeah Im satisfied, originally I thought as its a first demo we'd get a few sold around Ireland and anything after that would be a bonus, but then we got the offer from Rotten Productions and was told it could be in a number of distros abroad my expectations grew from there. What I would have liked to do differently would be to have gone in to a proper studio and get it mixed and mastered by professionals, although I like filthy recordings myself I dont think the production gives those tracks great justice, I can see us recording those tracks again at a later date. The main thing is the demo has gotten our name out in the scene and we can build on that.

6. What are some of the bands strongest musical influences and non - musical influences at the moment?
Disgorge (MEX) will always be my biggest influence to write the material, along with bands such as Last Days of Humanity, CBT, Amputated, Squash Bowels, Devourment etc... Austen (the new vocalist) seems to be going for something similar to the inward gurgles of CBT.

7. Can you tell us about your demo, "Sepsis Sacral Carna"? How much time do you spend to mutilate these shits?
The first track on the demo 'Laparoscopic...' was the first track we wrote but it got changed quite a bit, riffs taken out, new ones put in, riffs changed etc... until we were happy with it. The others seemed to come together quite quickly. All the tracks were finished a good while before getting time to record them.

8. And how does the song writing process work for Sarcosis?
I always write the material in my one time not at band practice. (Kenny did the same when he was in the band). I never really say to myself "Im going to write some riffs today" Im usually already messing on guitar and if I do something I like Ill write it down, usually when that happens I come up with loads more.

9. What kind of gear do you use?
I use pearl drums with zildjian cymbals I hope to extend my kit as soon as I can. I play Jackson guitars as does Walsh.

10. With song titles such as "Laparoscopic Plication of Perforated Duodenal Ulcer", Idiopathic Multiple Pigmented Hemorrhagic Sarcoma and "Chronic Innard Sphacelation", your lyrics [if theres any] seems to be straight out of a medical book. Do you think it should be "gore" to fit the musick better?
For the demo and at the moment there's no lyrics, but for practice and live we have dropped our vocal effects so soon I might see how I am at writing some and see how the fit in (writing lyrics is a field Ive had very little experience in). Most of the track titles have been helped along by the medical dictionaries alright, I often think about taking a different route as you say "gore" but I think the medical terms suit well.

11. Do you have a great admiration/fascination to serial killers?
I have interest in some alright, such as Ed Gein, Jeffrey Dahmer, Jack the Ripper etc... Mainly for the reason some of my favorite horror movies are based on them.

12. Have you ever cuntemplated about how such serial killers feel about lyricist and gore enthusiast such as yourselves, using their twisted state of mind for lyrics and themes? Elaborate.
Well the above are all dead so I doubt they think about it that much.

13. If you are to be a serial killer, who would you be and what sorts will your victims be?
Haha, I suppose Ed Gein. I think Id look quite well in clothing made from the skin of dead bodies. No harm in having a fascination for the female anatomy either.

14. Can you tell us why Kenny left the band? Are you still in cuntact with him?
Yeah Kenny and myself were mates before Sarcosis formed so itll remain that way. The main reason he left was because of his declining interest in goregrind. He suggested looking for new members before officially leaving as he knew I was very keen on the band growing and hitting the live scene. He parted on good terms.

15. Tell us a little bit about the two members, Austen and Walsh. How did you hook up with these guys? And did some of you played in other bands before Sarcosis?
I've known Walsh for four or five years we were in school together, we used to jam the odd time on guitar just cover songs and stuff. I've known Austen for a while, but only got to know him well not long before he joined. We have a bass player lined up now too he had his first practice yesterday and I can see him working out well. It's great to have a full line up of equally keen members.

16. Do you guys have any other bands, projects beside Sarcosis?
I'm drumming in a raw BM band 'Infearox' which should have a demo out soon enough, Im not writing any guitar for it or anything and I keep it totally separate to Sarcosis, it gives me a chance to play drums in a totally different style. I have often thought of starting a porno grind band but I think it'd get in the way of Sarcosis.

17. Hows Rotten Productions as a label? Have they done a good job promoting your demo and your band? And will you work with them in the future?
Rotten Productions are pretty new to the scene and Im sure they will grow more, at the moment they have 3 releases. I think they are doing their best for us, it's not easy Im sure to promote a demo of a band who are totally new to the scene. As for working with them in the future, Im not sure we'll see how they progress. For the next release we hope to have a pro recording and layout, Ill be in no rush to get it out Im planning spending time searching for the best deal we can get.

18. Are you guys now in the process of mutilating new materials? if so - how will it sound cumpared to "Sepsis Sacral Carna"?
Yeah we have enough new material to record an EP but Im going to give it time before entering the studio. We're going to record some rough pre - production tracks first to let people hear the capabilities of the new line up. The new material is quite similar to 'Sepsis...' in most ways I suppose but catchier. I enjoy playing the new tracks a lot more as do the rest of the band. The next release should be a big step up.

19. How would you describe the style youre playing?
Goregrind with a slight hint of brutal death I suppose, Something Ive noticed in reviews is how different people interpret the style we play in differently and hear different influences.

20. Can you say something about your place, Ireland? Name some good Irish bands that deserve more attention than they get...
Well our biggest brutal band 'Putrefy' they definitely deserve to be up there with the top Brutal Death Metal bands, I think they'll go a lot further with their second album the pre production tracks are great. Also, the only other goregrind band on the Island 'Grotesque Embalment' they have a tape coming out real soon along with a few splits. Other bands to check out if you havent already are Abaddon Incarnate (grind) Sinister Demise (Death Metal).

21. What is your opinion about todays gore/grind scene? Where do you see it in the next few years?
In my opinion the scene is swamped with one man bands with countless side bands all using drum machines and I see them disappearing in the next few years (Don't get me wrong I think there are some great bands out there who use drum machines). I didn't mind drum machines at all before but i think its becoming a bit ridiculous. Its great to hear new goregrind bands appearing in the scene with real drummers, these bands will keep the scene going.

22. What are you guys doing besides playing in Sarcosis? Do you engage orgies for fun?
Haha not me anyway Im taken, but I can always watch.

23. When we talk about Philippines, do you know some of our death/grind/gore bands?
Yeah a couple such as Pus Vomit and Human Mastication. I'd like to hear what else you have to offer.

24. What can we expect from the band in the near future?
An EP or a Split cd if we find a good band to do it with, as many gigs as we can do and some gigs abroad as soon as possible.

25. Current Playlist.
Disgorge (MEX)
Amputated
Foetopsy
