Interview: Splatterwhore

Answered by: John

1. Hey John! How are things going bro?

Hail Jamie! Thanks for the interview, brother! Things are going very well right now. Just writing tons of new songs. As of now, we have 6 new songs written since “Kaviar Die-Hards”. More to come shortly.

2. Give us a little background on the band members and how you guys are formed. Is it a real choice to be a 2piece, or is just because you could not find any good musicians in your area?

Well, there has actually been a line-up change: Brandon is not in the band anymore and he won’t come back. I have a new guitarist/vocalist, Roger. Also we have a new bass player, Jared. We had a guy record leads for us on the Bowel Stew split, but he’s never around, so he’s probably not gonna last long. Both these dudes are awesome and we’re getting along great. This is a good fucking line-up as a 3-piece. But before, we were only a 2-piece because I didn’t like the guys Brandon wanted to bring in and I didn’t like the guys he wanted to bring in. It worked out for the 2 years of just us 2, but shit was going nowhere because we couldn’t survive as a 2 piece because of live shows. He was busy, unmotivated, sickly and his other band was more important, so it just wasn’t working out. These new guys are fucking great and the new shit is better in my opinion.

3. Can you tell us why you have chosen Splatter Whore as bands name? do you think it fits well to your musick style? How would you like to describe Splatter Whore's musick?

We got the name from the MUCUPURULENT song, “Splatter Whore”. I just loved this name because it was nonsensical and badly translated sounding. I love bad metal translations very much and I thought this was just fucking cool sounding! I really love MUCUPURULENT and have been one of my favorite bands for years. Also, it’s not saying one way or the other if we are “porn” or “gore”. Just a nice medium ground. SPLATTER WHORE is a grooving, grinding, pornographic grind/metal band and our music is mid-paced mostly with heavy guitars, catchy riffs and splattery, deep vocals with naturals mixed in. A nice mix of thrash/gore/death/sleazy rock.

4. When I got "Kaviar Die Hards" cd in my hands for the first time I wouldn’t think I would be so positively staggered. Can you tell us more about this album? How did you hook up with Marco/Rotten Roll Records?

Thanks man! Glad to hear you like it. I’ve heard some very positive stuff about this CD. Actually, I haven’t heard ANYTHING negative about it yet and it’s been out for 10 months or so. It’s sold very well (only a little over 100 copies are available from RRR now and just a few from me) and people are always telling me how much they like it. I’m more than pleased with our debut CD. Things are gonna change up a little on the next full length, mainly because Brandon is not included on the writing process anymore, but the original sound is still there, but more sleazed out rock and metal influences. More interesting for sure. I’m loving the new stuff. Marco was introduced to me through Heiko from GONORRHEA PUSSY. He told me that Marco was starting a new label called ROTTEN ROLL REX and that we should show him our recording and see if he wanted to release it. Marco was fucking happy as hell when he heard the stuff and immediately told us that he wants to release everything we ever record! I was really nervous because I never had anyone critique my music before, but he was blown away (he said) and then decided to release all of our stuff. Now we’ve got full-colored shirts, patches and a split 7” with Bowel Stew (out soon!) out on RRR.

5. Are you happy with the way it turned out? If not, what would you liked to have done differently? How was the response to this album been so far?

Oh yeah, I’m pretty happy with they way it turned out. Of course, there are always going to be things I’d like to have done differently. The recording itself is pretty damn good, but the high-hats are kind of loud and couple nit-picky items. We still didn’t find our perfect vocal sound yet, but I’m still trying to find the perfect combination of pedals. The biggest thing I wish was different is the layout. I did it on my own and it was rushed, also the wrong CD art was put on the CD itself. It was gonna look cool as hell, but somehow Marco didn’t receive the correct art and assumed we didn’t submit any, so it’s something not as cool. Whatever, though. Still happy with the outcome. Like I said before, the response has been fucking killer! I am totally happy with how many people love the album.

6. How is Rotten Roll Records as a label? Has it done a good job promoting your album and your band? Do you plan on working with them again in the future?

Rotten Roll is fuckin killer. He always goes to festivals and stuff and sells tons of shit. Our CD is probably 90+ percent in Europe. The distribution in the USA is pretty good. I would like to see it a little more in North America, but all-in-all, it’s damn good distribution. I plan on using Rotten Roll for sure. I have no complaints!

7. Tell us about the cover picture of "Kaviar Die Hards". And how does the visual imagery relate and lyrics to Splatter Whore's musick?

I got that picture from a DVD I have where it’s nothing but girls pissing/shitting in their panties. I took tons of screen grabs and decided I liked this one the best because of how the logo would work there and how off-center the girl was. I just liked the way it looked. Then I just added some effects, made wallpaper in the background, added the logo and album title and that was about it! I thought this was perfect because it shows the girl’s ass with shitty, diarrhea panties and it really would be great for “Kaviar Die-Hards”. Most of our songs (especially now) are pornographic and sleazy as hell. I thought this was a good album cover because it’s not too blatantly “sick” and just being sick for the sake of being sick. It’s really got a sense of sleazy dirtiness if you look at the pictures in the CD. Don’t want to be some band who tries overly hard to be disgusting, but purely dirty looking.

8. Obviously Porn/Goregrind, Death Metal, Thrash Metal even Rock & roll have been an inspiration, but what else do you listen to? What are some of the bands strongest musical influences?

For me personally, I listen to mainly goregrind and metal. I listen to (any used to listen to exclusively) black/thrash/death metal and even crust/grind … So I get a lot of drumming influence from those kinds of bands. Roger listens to crust, grind, speed/thrash metal, sleazy rock, and some other stuff that I’m not really totally sure about. But he’s got a cool style when he writes riffs and it’s just great when we write songs. Jared listens to classic heavy/thrash metal. We have a cool and diverse musical background in SPLATTER WHORE. I have way too many bands that have influenced me as a drummer and a musician in general to list them. I have been listening to all types of underground music for many years and all have inspired me to make music and shape and mold how I play. .

9. Splatter Whore being inspired by kaviar, piss, voyeurism and shitloads of other perverted stuff. How does your family and girlfriend reaction knowing you're dealing with this stuff everyday?

Hahaha… That’s a killer question! Well, my dad knows about all that stuff, but doesn’t talk to me about it because that’s not his business and I don’t like to talk about it. Also, I think my mom knows, but she has never mentioned anything to me. I hope it stays like that!!! My girlfriend also is very aware of that fetish of mine. At this point, she just “understands” that but doesn’t think it’s totally horrible or totally great. We’ll just have to see what happens in the future... I’m kind of curious myself! My family knows about this shit, but doesn’t talk to me about that stuff. I never talk about my band or anything with family (or at least not much) because I just don’t want to. Also, I have to be careful about who knows about my band because I work in a job where I definitely don’t want people to know about that because I don’t think people would like using me for service if they knew that. Sometimes I tell people I’m a drummer and they ask my band’s name and I have to make something up or just say we don’t have a name or something…Hahaha…

10. You will be having a 7” split with BOWEL STEW and ELECTRO TOILET SYNDROM, what can fans expect from this album and how would you say it compares to "Kaviar Die hards"?

The only split we have material for is the Bowel Stew split 7”. This will be out in a matter of weeks. Doing a split 7” gave us an opportunity to try out some new sounds, which is something we didn’t really want to risk doing on a full length. There’s a lot more leads and we played around with throwing a few more natural vocals in the mix. Obviously, it still has all the groove, hooks, and rollicking riffs Splatter Whore fans should expect out of us. The full-length we’re working on now is even truer to our roots though, and is already shaping up to be quite the worthy successor to Kaviar Die-Hards. We’ve had some people that have heard it say that it’s fucking killer shit, and I agree. Again, I already wish I could have changed some stuff on it, but all-in-all it’s a damn god split and I love our songs. It will be limited to 500 copies. Also, Marco is trying to do either 100 yellow/100 brown or 50 yellow/50 brown colored vinyls. Hope that works!

11. The copro-duction on the "Kaviar Die Hards" was heavy as fuck. Does the new materials have a similar sound to that shit?

Well, that’s one of the things that is totally different. Brandon recorded KDH and so he’s no longer with the band, so we found somebody else to record us. Geoff Sprock recorded us and it sounds really good, but we didn’t have time to refine many of the sounds because I was in a horrible hurry because I was leaving for Europe for a month and had to get it done… Therefore, some of the sounds and things aren’t totally refined and sound even punkish, but sounds, really really good. I want the next recording to heavy as hell and more of a metal production.

12. How does the song writing process work for Splatter Whore? How much time do you spend to mutilate a song?

Most of the time we start with a song title, then we feel out how the song should go according to the title… Roger finds that easier for him. He usually comes up with the riffs, and once we have several riffs, we change them up and put them together however we feel sounds good. I also have some ideas for riffs, but I’m not the main song writer. I come up with the titles and decide how the drums go. We decide together what sounds good and also decide together how the vocals are going to go. The vocals always come last for us. I think this is a good idea because when we play the song without vocals and it kicks ass, when we add vocals it’s gonna kick even more ass. I figure if the music is great, then with the vocals it’s gonna be a a real killer. That’s why I like doing vocals last. It usually takes us 2 practices to get a complete song together without vocals. .

13. What kind of gear do you use?

I use Tama drums for now. One day soon, I’d like to get a new set. I also use Boss pedals for vocals. Roger uses a Jackson guitar most of the time, but when that’s not working, has to use an old Squire. And unfortunately, that’s what he had to use that on the Bowel Stew split. I have no idea what kind of bass Jared uses. The amps we use are fucking pieces of shit, but they get the job done. Roger had a guitar amp that was cool, but it doesn’t work anymore, so we just have fucking shitty equipment… Nothing professional. Maybe someday we’ll get some cool gear.

14. Do you have a great admiration/fascination to serial killers?

I personally don’t have any big admiration to any serial killers. I guess it just never interested me too much. I mean, I think it’s cool to hear about certain things that they did, but I definitely would hate to be killed by a serial killer! I think serial killers are fun to hear about, but I think people would have a different idea about it if their family, girlfriend, or whatever was victim of a killer! Hahahaha… I don’t know man, I just don’t think it’s that great. I know Roger has read some books about serial killers in the past. I used to be more into them than I am now, though.

15. Have you ever cuntemplated about how such serial killers feel about lyricist and gore enthusiast such as yourselves, using their twisted state of mind for lyrics and themes? Elaborate.

Yeah, I’ve thought about that before. I personally think that a serial killer’s mind is way too fucked up and if they heard about some band talking about them in their songs, that they would not understand why they think it’s cool, or they would just think they are idiots because they have no idea what it’s like to be a killer. I’m sure they would be honored and be happy to have some support instead of everyone hating him. Who knows!?!? But I think that killers would mainly feel honored, but still think it is silly. Don’t know!!! .

16. If you are to be a serial killer, who would you be and what sorts will your victims be?

Well man, I don’t think I would kill just anybody. I think it would be cool to be kind of a “justice” killer. Killing pieces of shit and evil people. I’ve been watching this new show “Dexter” where he just kills murderers and assholes because he has a killing addiction, but doesn’t kill innocent people. That would be the best for me, I think.

17. And how would you like to die?

Well, right now, no means of death would be good for me. I like life way too much! I’ve got way too many cool things going on in my life to think about death. But I guess this is a shitty goregrind answer, but I would like to die instantly and never know what was about to happen. Sorry about all of these pussy answers! Probably not what you were looking for, but man I’m more into perverted, sleazy porno shit than gore!!! Of course, I love gore; pathological/medical lyrics mainly, but I’m more porn than gore for the most part. Although, “pornogrind” right now is really fucking boring me for some reason.

18. What are you guys doing besides playing in Splatter Whore? Do you engage orgies for fun? Do you sniff you grandma's underwears?

I have a job that I’m trying to get out of and start my own business. It would be an opportunity for me to make better money and work less. Also, I have an awesome girlfriend, who lives in Germany, but she’ll be living with me here in about a year. Also, I like to read, watch TV shows, collect records & CDs, check out new bands, watch movies and keep active in the gym and so on. All of these things + the band keep me more than busy. Roger is still undecided what he will do & where he will live, so the band may make a sudden pause someday soon. Don’t know what’s gonna happen there. Jared has 3 bands, including ours, and also works a job, so needless to say he’s pretty fucking busy, too. Orgies? I definitely think those don’t happen in real life!!! Hahaha…

19. Tell us about the scene in your area. Any new bands worth checking out? And what's your opinion about today's gore/grind scene? Where do you see it in the next few years?

This is the USA, and the very middle of the USA, so there are no bands in my area ever. Some bands pop up here and there, but there is no great gore scene anywhere around because the States is way too huge to have a concentration of grinders/metals. The gore/grind scene in general is in the moment pretty boring right now. But I’ve got hope that sometime it will come back strong again. There are just way too many drum-machine bands that all sound the same and I’m pretty sick of that shit by now. Although, I have been seeing a lot less of it lately. I don’t know if I’m just tuning it out or if some are giving up. I hope that some new bands will come around soon and revive this down-point it seems like is happening at the moment. VISCERA INFEST is a new gore/grind band from Japan who just kick fucking ass. I’m happy to see a killer band like that start suddenly. I’m staying confident about the scene. .

20. Any chance you could cum over to the Philippines?

That would be a fucking dream! I would love to visit the Philippines, especially with the band! I just don’t know how that would work with getting us over there because I don’t think the other guys are gonna want to buy plane tickets. If somehow we could come, we would love it! I am really curious about the Philippine-scene and to see how shows are there… I bet they’re sicker than fuck! Pay for Roger and Jared’s tickets and we’re there ;)

21. What can we expect from the band in the near future?

A proper full-length CD (40+ minutes) in fuckin digipack format and LP. Also, we want to start playing shows sometime. We’ve never played live… We’re just waiting for the right opportunity. We don’t want to play around this area. Otherwise, we just want to keep writing, recording and releasing shit. Always working on something.
